Why delegation matters — and why it’s so often missed

Effective delegation is one of the most powerful tools a leader can develop. It creates clarity for individuals and teams, frees up energy for strategic thinking, and builds trust and capability across an organisation. Yet in practice, delegation is frequently underused, misunderstood, or avoided altogether.

For this organisation’s leadership alumni group, the challenge was a familiar one. Many of their leaders carry a strong sense of responsibility and care for their teams, which can sometimes translate into holding onto work rather than creating space for others to step up. In a complex, fast-paced operational environment, the instinct to just do it yourself can feel faster. But it comes at a cost.

The program was designed to help leaders shift their mindset: to see delegation not as a risk, but as a leadership enabler, and to walk away with a practical, immediately usable tool to do it well.

THE SOLUTION

The Sandbox Triangle® workshop

Being Leaders designed and facilitated a workshop using The Sandbox Triangle® framework; a practical tool that helps leaders understand where they currently delegate, where they could delegate more, and how to do so with clarity and intention.

Delivery was grounded in real leadership experience, striking a balance between practical tools, reflective conversation, and storytelling. A 90-minute online follow-up reflection session gave participants the chance to share how they’d applied the tools, notice what had shifted in their teams, and embed new delegation practices for the long term.
