Staying open to possibilities as a leader

The key to being an effective leader of leaders is to use your role to influence to integrate - to ensure that the work of your team stretches across and beyond the organisation with great impact. Be passionately interested in what is going on with your organisation’s strategy, the environment that it is working in, and the shifts going on in the wider world that will have an impact on it.

The key to being an effective leader of leaders is to use your role to influence to integrate – to ensure that the work of your team stretches across and beyond the organisation with great impact. Be passionately interested in what is going on with your organisation’s strategy, the environment that it is working in, and the shifts going on in the wider world that will have an impact on it.

This perspective is about how you look at your role and organisation.

What do you see as important? What really matters to the organisation achieving its purpose and outcomes?

Perspective includes taking a systems view of things and looking for the interconnections, for how one aspect of the organisation feeds into and interacts with another (for example, how workplace culture and values influence customer experience). Taking a systems view will provide a portrait of your organisation that is far more complex than a simple series of linear relationships. Organisations are dynamic, living human communities, and sometimes things happen in the weirdest and most illogical ways!

Your own mood is important in this as well. Working and leading in a mood of curiosity, wonder and possibility further open your perspective.

As a leader, staying open to possibilities is crucial for several reasons:

Adaptability: The business landscape is dynamic, and change is inevitable. By remaining open to possibilities, you can adapt to emerging trends, technologies, and market shifts. This adaptability enables you to navigate challenges effectively and seize new opportunities.

Innovation: Openness to possibilities encourages innovation within your organisation. By embracing new ideas, perspectives, and approaches, you foster a culture of creativity and exploration. This mindset can lead to breakthrough solutions, improved processes, and the development of new products or services.

Problem-solving: When you maintain an open mindset, you are more likely to explore diverse options when faced with problems or challenges. By considering various perspectives and solutions, you increase your chances of finding the most effective and efficient way to address the situation.

Collaboration: Being open to possibilities fosters collaboration and teamwork. It encourages individuals to contribute their ideas, insights, and expertise, creating a more inclusive and engaged workforce. By valuing diverse viewpoints, you can harness the collective intelligence of your team and make better-informed decisions.

When you stay open to possibilities in a leader-of-leaders role, you can effectively drive innovation, foster collaboration, and navigate change effectively. It enables you to embrace uncertainty, make better decisions, and create a culture of adaptability and growth within your organisation.
